Paignton Zoo:
Paignton Zoo, near Torquay in Devon had decided to build deluxe accommodation
for its two elephants, Gay and Duchess, and its two giraffes, Judy
and Paddy.
Exeter-based electrical contractors Beale and Cole Ltd were appointed
by the Zoo for the complete design and installation of the Electrical
and Heating systems. Beale and Cole were aware that quartz heating
had been used in other zoos around the country so they took the problem
to leading quartz heating suppliers, Tansun Ltd. who came up with
the ideal solution to suit the animals.
The solution was Tansun's range of Apollo heaters along with a Tansun
Control system to simulate the warmth of the Indian and African sun.
The heaters had to be positioned well away not just from the reach
of elephants' trunks but from the 6.5 metre stretch of a fully grown
giraffe's neck and from their enormous nine-inch long tongue as well!
Beale and Cole, estimating manager Brian Coomber said: "This was a
request that was somewhat out of the ordinary but when we took the
problem to Tansun we got all the advice and support we needed."
